Short description
Escape the crowds and discover Istria’ s best-kept secret. Walk with your family from the legend of the dragon of Monte Madonna to a hidden crystal-clear bay, exploring ancient military trenches and bunkers, panoramic sea views, and peaceful protected forests along the way. Swim, relax, and reconnect — this isn’t just a walk, it’s a story you’ll step into.
Long description
Discover a side of Istria that even many locals rarely experience. This guided walk takes you from the mystical hill of Monte Madonna above Šišan (near Pula) all the way to the hidden Kala Bay — a journey through stories, silence, and breathtaking nature.
We begin along a shaded forest trail, easing into a slower rhythm. As we gently walk uphill through fragrant Mediterranean macchia, you’ll discover why this hill is known as Svetica — “The Saintly One.”
Along the way, history comes alive. You’ll explore the remains of an Austro-Hungarian military complex — hidden trenches, former battery positions, and stories spanning from the time of Emperor Franz Joseph to the Cold War era under Tito.
At the top, a breathtaking 360° panoramic view awaits, stretching across the Adriatic Sea and nearby islands — a perfect moment to pause, breathe, and take it all in.
We then descend into a protected NATURA 2000 area — a tranquil world of holm oak forest, birdsong, butterflies, and untouched beauty. This is where you reconnect — with nature and yourself.
Our final stop is Kala Bay — a secluded, crystal-clear cove still used by local fishermen. In the summer, you can enjoy a refreshing swim or simply relax by the sea. We’ll take a light break with seasonal local fruit, soak in the views, and fully unwind. A small beach bar nearby offers the option for a coffee or a cold drink before heading back.
